2003 A Big Year For
NJSAC
Many exciting things happened to NJSAC in the year 2003.
Alliances with 2 major rehabilitation facilities are making services
which NJSAC presently offers in northern New Jersey, available to
stroke survivors and their families in other parts of New Jersey.
SAVE THESE DATES!
HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital in Tinton Falls
January 30th @ 2:00 PM
On Friday, January 30, 2004, Dr. Norman Einhorn will speak on
"Coping With Visual Deficits After a Stroke or Head Injury".
Stroke survivors often find their vision has been affected.
Dr. Einhorn will speak about the different symptoms after a stroke,
including double vision or concentration difficulties. The
promising news is that many dysfunctions are treatable. If you
or your loved one has any type of visual loss or dysfunction, come
and hear Dr. Einhorn speak. Refreshments will be served. For
more information, call 732-460-5328.
Thursday, March 18th, 2004 @ 5:00 PM
A Kick-Off Dinner will be held to introduce the free sound and
movement therapy program for stroke survivors that will be starting
in April. All who are interested in the program are invited to
the dinner. Call 732-460-5328 for more information and to

CareOne
CareOne at the Cupola in Paramus and NJSAC now offer a twice
monthly morning Exercise Program for stroke survivors, run by Kevin
Gihooly, Exercise Physiologist. While we had some difficulty
arranging transportation with Bergen County, those problems are
being worked on and we are hoping to have this resolved for the next
newsletter.
The first program of 2004 will be on Tuesday, January 13.
The exercise begins at 110:00 AM. Get there a little early and
enjoy refreshments and networking with other participants. The
free exercise program is held on the second and fourth Tuesday of
each month. Call Kevin at 201-444-8200 or Mary Jo at

Shaking Our Cans and
Placing Our Cans
In 2003, Mary Jo and Ed Schreiber spent their weekends, from
spring to the beginning of winter, shaking NJSAC cans at Kings,
Pathmark and ShopRite supermarkets in New Jersey. Fred Nass,
and Cira and Peter Canavan also volunteered their time.
Shoppers demonstrated their generosity by donating $21,391.55 for
the year.
We are asking you to give up one of your weekends to collect at
your favorite supermarket. Call Mary Jo at 973-450-4114 and
volunteer. We will make the arrangements for you and give you
the supplies you need. Beside collecting donations, we met and
signed up stroke survivors, caregivers and health care workers who
were not aware of NJSAC and it's services.
Another way NJSAC is collecting donations and bringing NJSAC into
the public eye is by placing collection cans with our name and
telephone number on counters of local businesses, Mom & Pop and
family establishments. We have just started this and are
seeing some good results. Call 973-450-4114 and order the
number of cans you want to place.

The Sixth Annual Holiday Party was held on Friday, December 12th
at Senior Care Totowa. This pot-luck event was attended by 60

another drawing. This time Tony and Vicky Galofaro won the

At the request of the people who have been attending the Friday
evening program in Totowa, the fourth year of movement and sound
therapy programs will resume there on Friday, April 9th. This
is conducted by Maureen Nelson, our creative arts therapist,
supporter and friend. These programs are run on the second and
fourth Fridays of the month at 7:00 PM. In the group sessions,
Maureen addresses the emotional, psychological and physical needs of
the stroke survivors. She stimulates all of the senses, and
draws as much participation as possible from each person within the
group. Mind and body are not regarded separately. She
uses the articulation of sounds, involving thought, muscle, action,
energy, emotion, and soul. Much laughter is heard coming from

Come Cruise with Miss America
Jackie Mayer, stroke survivor and Miss America 1963, will be with us
on our first cruise for stroke survivors sponsored by NJSAC.
Jackie Mayer was a guest speaker at our Fundraiser Dinner in
November 2002. At that time, she talked about her struggle to
recover from her stroke, that occurred seven years after she became
Miss America. She gave an inspiring and encouraging message to
the stroke survivors and all who attended the dinner.
You can meet her in person at the cocktail hour that is scheduled
for the first evening of the cruise. That will also be the
time to meet and talk with other members, families and friends who
are sailing with NJSAC.
There is still time to book your passage. Call Joanne or Janet
at 1-800-531-7327 or 732-922-8580, and tell them you want to cruise
with NJSAC.

sales. NJSAC depends on the support of the 1300 stroke
survivors, families, supporters and health care workers who receive

on it's goals of bringing New Jersey stroke survivors together, and
opening programs for continuing recovery or stroke survivors in New
Jersey. Show your support and order tickets now. The
tickets are only $30 each or $300 for a table of ten. Bring
your family and friends and fill a table of your own. The
event includes a buffet, fashion show with surprise model, door

$3,000 Grant Received from The Henry H. Kessler
Foundation
The day after our successful Fundraiser/Dinner, NJSAC received the
news that we were approved for a grant of $3,000 to supplement the
cost of the newsletter. NJSAC sends out six newsletters a
year, free of charge to 900 stroke survivors and 300 supporters and
healthcare workers. The newsletters have information about new
and existing activities and programs run by NJSAC, and the latest
information about stroke and stroke recovery.
The grant application was prepared by Nancy Mamis-King, stroke
survivor and Jess Fuchs, caregiver with input from Mary Jo
Schreiber. Nancy was a grant writer before her stroke and was
the guiding force. Jess had never written an application for a
grant before. Encouraged by their success, they are eager to
start the next one.
NJSAC thanks Nancy and Jess for all the hard work they put
into preparing this grant application.

Opening the World to Stroke Survivors
The first cruise for stroke survivors sponsored by NJSAC was a
tremendous success. Stroke survivors and caregivers who had
concerns about going on a cruise were put to ease by the well
trained crew as soon as we boarded the completely handicap
accessible Norwegian Dawn. The seven day cruise sailed from
the Port of New York to the Bahamas and Florida. Sixty five
people were in our group which included 25 stroke survivors from 8
states. Our group got acquainted at the NJSAC Welcome Cocktail
Hour the first night out. The next day Jackie Mayer, Stroke
survivor and Miss America 1963 gave an inspirational talk. On
Friday, the group met again to hear how NJSAC was started and future
plans for more cruises. There was also a presentation of a
check from the Norwegian Dawn captain to NJSAC. By the end of
the cruise the group had become one loving family. This was
expressed in the following poem by Joan McGill, stroke survivor from
Redding, Connecticut.
From California to Long Island
From New Hampshire to Tennessee
We come together to share
What we have in common
Strokes
We find on our week long journey
To the Bahamas and back
That we can have fun
Soak up adventure
That we can do this
With our walkers and our wheelchairs
Braces and canes
We not only share our strokes
But we celebrate our differences
With the help of family and friends
We've added this accomplishment to our recovery
Congratulations!
