North to Alaska

The second cruise for stroke survivors, family and friends, sponsored by NJSAC began Saturday, May 21, 2005.  Our group of 29 people including 8 stroke survivors, began our adventure in Vancouver, Canada where we boarded the Island Princess.  A get-aquainted meeting for the people in our group was held on the first morning of the cruise. Ed Schreiber taped the people as they introduced themselves and told where they were from.  Mary Jo Schreiber, Executive Director of NJSAC greeted everyone.  She spoke about the current membership of NJSAC which numbers almost 1200 stroke survivors, and future trips and cruises NJSAC will be sponsoring.

The seven-day cruise and most tour excursions were accessible for everyone.  Sightings of bear, moose, otters, bald eagles and other animals were plentiful and made the cruise an exciting experience.  A group dinner was held two nights before the cruise ended.  A surprise birthday cake was brought out and Happy Birthday was sung to Mary Jo by the group, led by the waiters and the maitre'd, who had a beautiful baritone voice.

Twenty four people continued this exciting excursion in a glass-domed train, visiting the Heart of Alaska.  The train took us to Denali, Mt McKinley and Anchorage.  We ended our journey convinced that stroke survivors can still travel and enjoy the world.

NJSAC is sponsoring two more trips in the next year.  The first is to Las Vegas in October 2005.  The second is a Carribean Cruise in January 2006.  Watch for more information about these trips in our upcoming newsletters.

2005 Fundraiser/Dinner

The best NJSAC fundraiser/dinner yet was held on Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at La Neve's Restaurant in Haledon, NJ.  It was attended by 61 people.  Ed Schreiber welcomed the guests and introduced Mary Jo who also welcomed everyone.  A sumptuous all-you-can-eat family style dinner was served.  Entertainment was supplied by the Roy Meyer Swingers and comedian John Muro.  Everyone enjoyed hearing and singing along to the tunes of the 40s and 50s.  Drawings for door prizes and Tricky Tray prizes were done throughout the dinner.  The 50/50 drawing of $107 was won by Elaine Matthews.  The evening ended with the raffle drawing.  The first prize of two Continental Airline tickets was won by Dr. Richard Zaback.  The second prize of a four day vacation for two to Las Vegas was won by Anthony Tremarco of Belleville.

We thank the following people for their help in making the dinner a success: Lauren Candido, Christine Dour, Mike Fliegler, Lila Nass, Dakota Nguyen, Laura Rizzo and Laura Winter.  A special thanks to all who donated gifts and to Vicky Galofaro for collecting the gifts and setting up the prizes for the Tricky Tray drawings.

Please support and attend future programs run by NJSAC.  We hope the attendance will grow every year that we have a fundraiser/dinner during May, which is Stroke Awareness Month.
